Shangri-la Survival guide

28 Apr 2023

Worked as a waiter during school holidays, saw some training gaps, and created instructional materials that Shangri-la HR later used for their internal training. Pitched the latter as a special project and upskilled myself in the process.

Deliverables (what was created?)
  • a "survival guide" to help train new waiters working at Shangri-la

  • infographic summarizing the 7 key steps for new part-timers

Outcomes (who benefited & how?)

My client was Shangri-la HR. The primary beneficiaries are the new part-timers who did not find the existing staff orientation training materials *useful. Upon breaking down the training guide, I found that it had a lot of content but could have been better designed. e.g. it did not prioritize or include key information that would be essential to new staff joining the first few days. The secondary beneficiary is the HR department which now has a standardized document to address the issue mentioned above, and easily make changes when policies change.

  • new staff; reduced anxiety for new joiners who are new to the workforce

  • Shangri-la HR; standardized training for new joiners (full and part-timers)

  • Shangri-la HR; reduce printing costs via the use of QR codes to disseminate this training "survival" guide

  • myself; gained experience in identifying and creating own opportunities

*accurate at the time when I was creating the survival guide (Sep 2023)

Reflections (what worked well & and what can be improved?)

What worked well?

  • turned around fast; created a functioning guide within 48 hours

  • applied the use of collaborative tools (google doc) in a real-world setting

  • simulated working with a real client, including negotiating payment terms, and conducting a handing-over process

  • first experience in trying to network and create opportunities

What can be improved?

  • training guide and infographic were created before I joined Singapore Polytechnic. After gaining new skills (relevant design modules taught in year 1), these digital artifacts should likely be better designed  â€‹
