Being an ICT Teacher - Part 1 (of 2)

Updated: Jun 25, 2018

I started attending ICT classes at RVPS in P4. I grew to love it and am fortunate that my dad is able to teach me some ICT stuff as well. So far, I only used the software for my own needs, and did not really apply the skills in any useful manner. Finally, during the June 2018 school holidays, I had an opportunity to be an ICT teacher myself!

Dad & I explored the idea of doing some volunteer work with the community where I may be able to apply my ICT skills. We brainstormed and captured our ideas using Padlet (https://padlet.com/chiahowie/whatsapp). We used the 5Ws & 1H to help identify what would be the most suitable ICT tool.

Eventually, we decided on WhatsApp and started to write a program outline as well as design a simple poster to advertise my ICT workshop. We also worked together to put up a slide deck using Google Slides (http://bit.ly/2LYjS3C).

I was fortunate that Sister Gillian was willing to give me an opportunity to apply my knowledge in a real world setting . This was finally a good chance to do something for my community. This was my first time doing volunteer work, and I am so looking forward to it!

Bonus:

The slides were designed using Google Slides (https://www.google.com/slides/about/). It works like Microsoft PowerPoint but simpler and more than a few people can work on the same file at the same time!

The poster was designed using Canva (https://www.canva.com/) and took me about 20 mins to complete. Steps involved were:

1. Asking Dad to take a pic while I posed with my grandpa.

2. Launch Canva

3. Select a template

4. Modify Text

5. Upload the pictures (I like)

6. Save & Download as Jpeg

7. Print the posters

Later, I realized that since most of my "students" are going to be elderly Chinese folks, I decided to do a poster that was in Mandarin. Dad gave me a tip by showing me how Google Translate https://translate.google.com/ works. You basically "Copy & Paste" what you need to be translated and that's it. Its really that simple! I then used the same technique to rework my slides http://bit.ly/2LYjS3C, so that it now has both English and Mandarin content.

Thank goodness for Google Translate.
